What is Chainlink?
Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that acts as a critical bridge between blockchains and the outside world. It enables smart contracts to securely access real-world data (like price feeds, weather, or events), traditional payment systems, and APIs, which are essential for most advanced decentralized applications (dApps) to function as intended.
The Network:
Chainlink operates as a marketplace where data providers, known as node operators, can sell access to real-world data feeds. Smart contracts request data, and multiple independent nodes fetch, validate, and deliver it on-chain. Payments are made in LINK tokens for this service. This decentralized approach ensures data reliability and mitigates the "oracle problem"—the risk of a single point of failure or manipulation.
Why It Matters:
DeFi Infrastructure: Chainlink is the most widely adopted oracle solution in DeFi, providing the price data that secures billions of dollars in value for lending protocols, derivatives, and stablecoins.
Expanding Use Cases: Beyond finance, its oracles enable smart contracts for insurance (flight data), gaming (randomness), supply chains (IoT sensor data), and more.
LINK Token Utility: LINK is used to pay node operators for their services and is also staked by them as collateral to guarantee data accuracy and network security.
