About Litecoin
What is Litecoin?
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency created in 2011 by Charlie Lee as a "lighter" version of Bitcoin. Often referred to as "digital silver" to Bitcoin's "gold," it was designed to be a faster, more efficient medium for everyday transactions while maintaining the core principles of decentralization and security.
The Technology:
Litecoin is a fork of the Bitcoin Core codebase with several key technical modifications. It uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm for its Proof-of-Work consensus, which was initially more resistant to specialized mining hardware (ASICs) than Bitcoin's SHA-256. Litecoin features a faster block time (2.5 minutes vs. Bitcoin's 10 minutes) and a larger total supply (84 million LTC vs. 21 million BTC), making it more suitable for smaller, faster transactions.
Why It Matters:
Battle-Tested & Reliable: As one of the oldest cryptocurrencies, Litecoin has proven its security and resilience over more than a decade of continuous operation.
Active Development: It has implemented significant upgrades like MimbleWimble (MWEB) for optional transaction privacy and the Lightning Network for instant, high-volume micropayments.
Liquidity & Adoption: LTC is widely accepted by merchants and integrated into payment processors, maintaining its role as a liquid, reliable cryptocurrency for payments.
Litecoin remains a key benchmark and a staple trading pair in the crypto ecosystem, valued for its simplicity, speed, and long-standing reliability as a transactional currency.
