About XRP
What is XRP?
XRP is the native digital currency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source, permissionless blockchain optimized for fast, low-cost, and scalable cross-border payments and asset transfers. It was created by Ripple Labs to serve as a bridge currency in global finance.
The Technology:
Unlike proof-of-work blockchains, the XRP Ledger uses a unique, energy-efficient consensus protocol. A distributed network of independent validators agrees on the order and outcome of transactions every 3-5 seconds without mining, making it significantly faster and greener than many counterparts.
Why It Matters:
Banking Integration: Designed for institutional use, XRP provides liquidity solutions for financial institutions to settle international payments in seconds.
Fixed Supply: All 100 billion XRP were created at genesis. Ripple holds a portion in escrow, releasing them systematically to the market.
Transaction Efficiency: Each transaction destroys a tiny amount of XRP (a "fee burn"), creating a built-in deflationary pressure.
XRP's market dynamics are heavily influenced by its adoption in traditional finance and the ongoing resolution of its high-profile legal case with the U.S. SEC.
