What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin that plays a foundational role in cryptocurrency markets. Launched in 2014, it was one of the first successful attempts to create a digital asset with minimal price volatility by tethering its value to a traditional currency. Its primary function is to provide traders, institutions, and decentralized applications with a stable digital asset that mirrors the US dollar without requiring direct access to the traditional banking system.
How It Maintains Stability:
Tether Limited, the company behind USDT, claims to maintain a 1:1 reserve backing for all tokens in circulation. This means for every USDT issued, there should be equivalent assets (like US dollars, treasury bills, and other liquid reserves) held in its treasury. The peg is maintained through market arbitrage and Tether's mint-and-burn mechanism: issuing new tokens for USD deposits and destroying tokens for USD withdrawals.
Why It Matters:
Market Utility: Over 60-70% of Bitcoin and other crypto trades are paired with USDT, making it the de facto trading pair and liquidity benchmark.
Capital Efficiency: Enables rapid movement between volatile crypto assets and a stable store of value without leaving the blockchain ecosystem.
