What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR Protocol is a developer-friendly, layer-1 blockchain designed to be scalable, secure, and simple to use. It aims to be the foundational platform for an "Open Web," making it easy for developers and users to build and interact with decentralized applications (dApps) without the complexity and high costs of earlier blockchains.
The Technology:
NEAR achieves scalability through a unique sharding technology called Nightshade, which dynamically splits the network's state and computation into multiple segments (shards) that process transactions in parallel. This allows the network to scale almost linearly with demand. Its consensus mechanism is a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) variant called Doomslug that provides practical finality in one block (approx. 1.2 seconds). NEAR also features human-readable account names (e.g., alice.near) and gas fee refunds for developers.

User & Developer Onboarding: Its focus on usability, with features like progressive security models and straightforward account creation, lowers the barrier to entry for mainstream users and developers.
