About Ethena
What is Ethena?
Ethena is a synthetic dollar protocol built on Ethereum that aims to create a crypto-native, yield-bearing stablecoin called USDe. Unlike traditional collateralized stablecoins, USDe achieves its peg through a delta-neutral derivatives strategy, offering users a scalable, decentralized dollar alternative with an embedded yield ("Internet Bond").
The Mechanism:
USDe is minted when users deposit staked Ethereum (stETH) as collateral. Ethena then shorts an equivalent amount of ETH perpetual futures on centralized exchanges to hedge the collateral's price volatility, creating a delta-neutral position. The yield for USDe holders is generated from two sources: the staking yield on the stETH collateral plus the funding rates paid by perpetual swap traders on the short positions.

Decentralized Stablecoin Innovation: It offers a censorship-resistant dollar alternative that is not reliant on traditional banking systems or fiat reserves.
Native Yield: USDe provides a built-in, attractive yield sourced directly from crypto-native markets (staking and derivatives), a feature most fiat-backed stablecoins lack.
Scalability & Composability: As a synthetic asset on Ethereum, USDe can be integrated into DeFi protocols for lending, trading, and as a stable settlement layer, similar to USDC or DAI.
Ethena’s success depends on the robustness of its hedging strategy and its ability to scale while maintaining peg stability, representing a novel and higher-risk/reward model in the stablecoin landscape.
