PnL in Trading: Realised Gains Count for Tax, Unrealised Ones Only on Screen
Select what genuinely interests you. Your picks feed directly into our editorial planning. PnL stands for profit and loss. In trading, the metric shows how much money a position is currently making or costing. One distinction matters, and many displays show it only in small print: realised PnL is the result of a closed trade, while unrealised PnL is a pure paper value that changes with every price tick. Only the realised gain lands in your account, and in Germany only that gain counts for the tax office.
