What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin (BTC) is a revolutionary form of money and a technological innovation that introduced the concept of cryptocurrency to the world. Its primary purpose is to function as a decentralized, global payment system and an asset class independent of traditional financial institutions.
The Innovation:
Bitcoin solved the "double-spend problem" for digital currency without requiring a trusted third party. This was achieved through the blockchain—a chronological chain of blocks containing transaction data, verified and secured by a network of miners using immense computational power (proof-of-work).
Why It Matters:
Monetary Policy: Its issuance is predictable and transparent, with new coins created through "mining" at a diminishing rate until the 21 million cap is reached (estimated ~2140).
Censorship-Resistance: Transactions cannot be easily blocked or reversed by intermediaries.
Self-Custody: Users can hold and control their own funds via cryptographic keys.
