Quick Take
  • The crypto market trades at $2.82 trillion, down 1.61% since yesterday’s close and 2.61% below Sunday’s high.
  • Traders are supposedly cutting risk before August inflation data lands on September 30.
  • Longs, or traders betting on higher prices, lost $209.40 million over 24 hours, twice the $101.52 million lost by shorts.
  • That is well short of the $454 million long flush on September 24, so leverage alone does not explain the drop.

What Happened

1. Leveraged Longs Took the First Hit

That is well short of the $454 million long flush on September 24, so leverage alone does not explain the drop.

24-hour longs: $209 million, about twice the shorts

Market Context

The crypto market trades at $2.82 trillion, down 1.61% since yesterday’s close and 2.61% below Sunday’s high.

Longs, or traders betting on higher prices, lost $209.40 million over 24 hours, twice the $101.52 million lost by shorts.

The market is trying to hold $2.79 trillion. Losing it brings $2.71 trillion and $2.53 trillion into play. To regain strength, it must reclaim $2.89 trillion, lost on September 23. A daily close above it would reopen $2.95 trillion and $3.05 trillion.

Morpho (MORPHO) fell about 5% over 24 hours to near $2.61, taking its seven-day loss to 7%. The price chart shows a possible double top, two peaks at nearly the same price. Morpho topped near $3.00 on August 24 and near $2.98 on September 25. The neckline, the low between the peaks, sits at $2.04. Until it breaks, the pattern is unconfirmed.

The neckline sits about 32% below the peaks, so a break could trigger a drop of similar size. Selling volume has faded since August 24, which leaves room for buyers. Morpho has just slipped below $2.62, so $2.51 is the next floor to watch.

Why It Matters

Traders are supposedly cutting risk before August inflation data lands on September 30.

The Fed raised rates on September 16 and traders now expect more. CME FedWatch now puts October hike odds at 68.1%. December pricing gives a second hike 55.9% odds.

Details

Past four hours: $119 million of longs, $12 million of shorts

Traders hit: about 102,100 in one day

2. Rate Hike Fears Build Before the September 30 Print

The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.17% on September 25, near its highest since 2007. Higher yields already pushed Bitcoin below $84,000 on September 23.

The August PCE report lands on September 30, two days away. July PCE inflation ran at 3.7%, and a hot August print would lift hike odds further. ETF buying has faded too, even though the last week’s buying was still net positive.

October hike odds: 68.1%, per CME FedWatch

10-year yield: 5.17% on September 25

ETF inflows: $134 million on September 25, down 87% from September 21

Coin Spotlight: Morpho (MORPHO)

Move: down about 5% in a day, 7% in a week

Pattern breaker: daily close above $3.00

Floors: $2.51, then $2.40, with the neckline at $2.04

Analyst’s View: Rate hike fear looks like the main weight. A mild September 30 print and a daily close above $2.89 trillion would put the October rally back on track, while losing $2.79 trillion points to $2.71 trillion.
